Lord of the Sabbath

Jan 11, 2026    Pastor Rev. Craig T. Smith

Discussion Questions (Small Groups / Sunday School)

1.    What emotions or experiences come to mind when you hear the word Sabbath?

2.   In Luke 6:1–11, what do the Pharisees seem most concerned about? What does Jesus seem most concerned about?

3.   Why do you think rules can sometimes feel safer than relationships?

4.   Jesus asks whether it is lawful to do good or harm on the Sabbath. What does this question reveal about God’s heart?

5.   Where might God be inviting you to choose mercy over comfort or control?

6.   How does seeing Jesus as Lord of the Sabbath reshape how you understand grace?

7.   What would it look like for you to “stretch out your hand” in trust this week?

Daily Devotions (Monday–Saturday)

Monday — The Purpose of God’s Law

Scripture: Deuteronomy 5:12–15

God gave the Sabbath not as a burden, but as a gift—especially to those who once knew slavery. The law was always meant to protect life and dignity.

Reflection: Where have you experienced faith as freedom—and where has it felt like pressure?

Prayer: Lord, teach me to see Your commands as gifts of grace.

Tuesday — Hunger and Grace

Scripture: Luke 6:1–5

Jesus reminds us that God cares about human need. Hunger—physical or spiritual—is not a failure; it is an invitation to grace.

Reflection: What hunger in your life are you trying to hide or manage on your own?

Prayer: Jesus, meet me in my need and teach me to trust You.

Wednesday — When Mercy Feels Risky

Scripture: Hosea 6:6

Mercy often disrupts systems that prize control and predictability. God’s desire has always been steadfast love.

Reflection: Where might mercy cost you comfort or approval?

Prayer: God of mercy, soften my heart to love like You do.

Thursday — Stretch Out Your Hand

Scripture: Luke 6:6–10

Healing begins when the man responds to Jesus’ command. Trust often comes before wholeness.

Reflection: What step of obedience is Jesus asking of you right now?

Prayer: Lord, give me courage to trust You with what feels vulnerable.

Friday — Rest in the Tomb

Scripture: Luke 23:50–56

Jesus rests in death, bearing the full weight of sin and brokenness. Even in silence, God is at work.

Reflection: Where do you need to rest in God’s promises rather than strive?

Prayer: Jesus, help me rest in what You have already done.

Saturday — Resurrection Rest

Scripture: Matthew 11:28–30

True rest is not escape—it is life under Jesus’ gentle rule.

Reflection: How might following Jesus actually lighten your load?

Prayer: Lord, I give You my weariness. Teach me to live in Your rest.
