Further Devotional Thoughts

As we reflect on the sermon from James 4:13-17, we are called to deeply consider the ways we plan our lives in relation to God’s will. Here are some devotional thoughts to meditate on:

1. Recognizing the Brevity of Life

James reminds us that life is fleeting, likened to a vapor that quickly vanishes. Take a moment to consider how you spend your days. Are you prioritizing eternal values or getting caught up in the temporary? Reflect on Psalm 90:12: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” What adjustments can you make to ensure that your time aligns with God’s purpose?

2. Humility in Planning

Consider your current plans—be it for the day, the week, or the year. How often do you include God in these plans? The phrase “If the Lord wills” isn’t just a polite addition; it embodies a heart posture of humility and dependence. Write down your plans and pray over them, asking God for His guidance and direction. What might He reveal to you about His will in your life?

3. Avoiding Practical Atheism

Reflect on areas where you might be living as if God is irrelevant. This can happen subtly; we may make choices based on societal expectations rather than seeking God’s will. Are there decisions you’ve made recently without prayerful consideration? Confess these to God and ask for His help in turning to Him first in all matters.

4. Embracing God’s Sovereignty

Trusting in God’s sovereignty can bring peace amidst life’s uncertainties. When we recognize that our plans are subject to His will, we can find comfort even when things don’t go as expected. Contemplate how embracing this truth can transform your anxiety into trust. Write a prayer declaring your trust in God’s plans over your own.

5. Living in the “If the Lord Wills” Mindset

How can you incorporate the mindset of “Deo Volente” into your daily life? It could be as simple as beginning your day with the intention to seek God’s will in everything. Create a habit of starting meetings or significant discussions with a prayer asking for God’s direction.

6. Responding to God’s Call

Is there a specific area in your life where you feel God may be nudging you? Whether it’s a calling to serve, a change in vocation, or an invitation to deepen your faith, respond with a heart open to His leading. Say, “Lord, I am willing,” and take a step of faith in that direction.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me to recognize the fleeting nature of my life and the importance of aligning my plans with Your will. Teach me to seek You earnestly in every decision I make, big or small. May my heart echo the words “If the Lord wills,” as I surrender my desires and plans to Your perfect purpose. Guide me to live a life fully devoted to You, trusting in Your sovereignty and goodness. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

As you go about your week, may you carry the spirit of "Deo Volente" with you, actively seeking to align your life with God’s will in all things.
